Bookkeeping FAQ

Should a bookkeeper be qualified?

While not legally required, it's highly recommended that a bookkeeper be qualified or experienced to ensure accuracy and efficiency in managing financial records. Channel Bookkeeping is qualified, regulated and supervised by the Association of Accounting Technicians, and fully insured.

Is an accountant the same as a bookkeeper?

Bookkeepers and accountants sometimes do the same work, but have a different skill set. In general, a bookkeeper's role is to record transactions and keep you financially organised day to day, while accountants provide consultation, analysis, and are more qualified to advise on tax matters.

What companies need a bookkeeper?

All businesses, regardless of size or industry, need bookkeeping to track their financial transactions and manage their finances effectively. If you don't feel comfortable with VAT or compliance, unsure what needs to go into your accounts, or just don't have the time to deal with it, a bookkeeper can help you with this.

How much does a bookkeeper cost?

We understand that each business is unique, so we tailor our services to meet with your business requirements. To find out more, please Book a Discovery Call

What if i don't use software?

Not using accounting software for your business finances means you'll need to keep track of everything manually, which can be time-consuming and prone to errors. As a Xero Advisor, we can get you setup with an easy to use software, providing training and support at every step. With Making Tax Digital, a new initiative by HMRC in the UK, this will mandate digital record-keeping for all sole traders and landlords, who come within the thresholds set, starting from April 2026, so it is worth getting setup and ready for this change.

What is Making Tax Digital?

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is part of the government’s plan to modernise the UK tax system, making it easier for people to get their tax right. MTD for VAT and Income Tax requires businesses to use MTD-compatible software to keep digital records and submit returns online.

What date does Making Tax Digital come into effect?

Making Tax Digital for VAT (MTD for VAT) was introduced for all VAT-registered businesses, regardless of turnover, in April 2022.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax begins in April 2026 for sole traders and landlords earning above £50,000 annually. Then in April 2027 MTD for Income Tax will effect sole traders and landlords earning above £30,000 annually. Finally, in April 2028 MTD for Income Tax comes into place for sole traders and landlords earning above £20,000 annually.

Do I need to tidy up my accounts/ paperwork before I hand it over?

I offer an accounts clean up service, so if you have got your accounts into a muddle, or have a pile of receipts you need catching up on, I can help with this.
